Ukhrul district is located between latitudes 94°00'E to 94°45'E and longitudes 24°15'N to 24°45'N, at an altitude of 1750 meters above sea level. According to the 2011 Census, the district has a population of 183,998, with 46,089 individuals engaged in farming, of which 20,205 are marginal farmers. Ukhrul falls under the Sub-Tropical Hill agro-climatic zone and spans an area of 4,544 square kilometers. Of the total cropped area of 31,680 hectares, 29,980 hectares are rainfed while only 1,700 hectares are irrigated. The district receives an annual rainfall of approximately 1,426 mm. The soils in the region include alluvial, lateritic black, red ferruginous, and requur types, supporting a variety of crops.
The major crops grown in Ukhrul include paddy, maize, garden peas, pulses, lime/lemon, ginger, turmeric, cabbage, broad beans, and the renowned King Chilli. Minor crops include mustard, field peas, groundnut, soybean, potato, tree beans, bananas, and kiwi fruit, with a cropping intensity of 153.02 per cent. Livestock farming is also significant, with cattle, pigs, buffalo, goats, poultry, ducks, and the unique Mithun being raised. Fisheries in the district include rohu, grass carp, common carp, and local fish varieties.
The primary source of income for the district's residents is agriculture, while business forms a secondary source of livelihood. Ukhrul is also known for its unique landraces, such as the Kachai Orange and Sirarakhong Chilli, and indigenous animal breeds like the Mithun and Haofa.
